Description
The owners of the Tuggles brand came to us with their idea: to create a tooth-pulling device that was also a toy, making a fun and memorable experience for children. However, they simply had the idea; they had no resources or knowledge of how to create a brand. This presented a great challenge, one that we were eager to take on.
We started by brainstorming basic brand necessities: names, slogans, different visual elements to name a few. Working together with our clients, we were able to establish the name Tuggles as their company identity. Once this was decided upon, we brainstormed and researched more advanced information: demographics, audience, psychographics, user personas, etc. We created all the necessary documents with this information for reference going forward as we started building the visual elements.
Our clients requested the logo be simple and not overly illustrated, as some of the companies they saw seemed too abstract. After creating multiple spec sheets and iterations, we decided upon a basic wordmark that has an element of playfulness while having the established feel that our clients desired.
Our next step was to create the package that would hold the fun product. In order to entice and stand out to our identified audience, we determined that bold colors and playful elements would be the best course of action. As we worked on these different elements, I created custom illustrations based on a character book they already had worked on. I took the existing illustrations and revised to a more modern, flat, cartoon-esque illustrative style. The illustrations have created a visual asset that not only helps the package sell, but also doubles as a useful marketing element across their website and social media. Once the package design was created, we worked hand in hand with the supplier to nail down the final iterations, and thus created a product that looks good, was cost efficient, and was easily marketable.
We determined that professional photography and staging would be essential for a successful brand campaign, so we got out our gear and hired some affordable models to show off the product, how to use it, and show the fun children can have with the toy. The photography was edited in two formats: a bright, well-lit lifestyle aesthetic for social media and website use, and a simple, clean, ecommerce style, used for selling and showing the product on the website. Both photography styles work well with the brand and play essential parts in marketing efforts.
The clients budget didn’t allow for a full custom site build, so we opted to use a Shopify template and customized as needed and as budget would allow. We were able to create a simple website that matches the brand and product well, and is easy to navigate, understand, and uses the various visual resources previously mentioned to help tie the brand together.
The Tuggles brand took time, effort, and lots of design thinking to accomplish, but the overall result works well, looks professional and established, and provided a blueprint and useful tools for marketing purposes for years to come.
